"Joey Nyame became a colleague at the beginning of the 2017-2018 school year. Although she has only been with us for two years, she has made herself indispensable. As the Middle School Counselor, she has shared her wisdom with students, parents, and colleagues with grace, discretion, and an overriding concern for what is in the best interests of the student. But she sees her role as stretching beyond the counselor's office and she has helped lead the Middle School work on Diversity and Inclusion, Gender and Identity issues. We now have two successful and well-attended clubs that meet each Friday and the work these students have done is paying dividends with students more willing to grapple with thorny issues that grownups often shy away from. In addition, Joey makes time to go see students in Middle School athletic events, concerts, and drama performances. This was noted by one family when they commented that Joey turned up at a School of Rock concert to see some students perform. Going above and beyond is simply what Joey does and who she is. Whether it is chaperoning in Spain, Italy, or South Africa or doing whatever it takes to make someone's day better, Joey always steps forward and makes a difference. Someone who lives our motto, Courage for the Deed; Grace for the Doing, she helps bring us closer to our mission. Not surprisingly, Joey is respected, admired, and loved by colleagues, parents, and students. With that in mind, she is worthy recipient of our Colleague Recognition Award.

"Josephine Nyame is a strong part of our Girard College community, and we have all benefitted from her presence this year. Girard College is a private boarding school for single parent, low-income families located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Josephine has brought insight, compassion, and motivation to everyone she encounters here at Girard.
I have known Josephine since she was a tenth grade student attending Girard College. From my perspective, one of Josephine’s main goals seems to involve giving back to her former community. That fact inspires everyone here. When she was a student boarder here at Girard College, she rallied her high school classmates to participate as mentors for middle schoolers. She made every effort to ensure its success. Now that she is a colleague and skilled counselor, I see that she has a deep understanding of students’ needs. Josephine knew how to connect with our students right away. She started by making sure that they knew how to reach her and understood her roles of the counselor. In our team meetings, Josephine offers useful insights and encourages others to try new, evidenced based techniques and interventions. When she speaks, we listen. The compassion in her daily work is evident in the community. She treats all students with respect and genuineness so that they know they are valued. Teachers frequently invite her into their classrooms to support the students. Her efforts do not end there. She also participates in our mentoring program for the high school girls. Her work with students at every level has resulted in a great deal of appreciation from the teachers, and students alike. I know Josephine will continue to motivate others in every environment. Josephine is currently serving Girard College as a long-term substitute. We at Girard College were fortunate to have her with us this year, but we know that she will continue to change lives wherever she goes.
